***UPDATE*** Please visit this post for a diagram of each step including the measurements. Use this post for the directions and that post for the measurements. Thanks!
My babies loved to be swaddled tight. But they constantly wriggled out of their swaddling. I made my baby wrap that I used for my boys and I loved it. (You can find it in the tutorials tab) But it's bulky and it's not that cute. I came up with this one in my mind and had to sit down and create it. And I LOVE it. It's functional and so cute. I can't wait to have a little girl. Are you kidding me? She's coming soon right? Alright, enough dreaming...on with the show...
And Fold down the bottom. You can then place your baby inside. Fold up the bottom. Fold in the side. Fold in the other side. And tie the swaddle flap.
All you need is two flannel receiving blankets. Take the contrasting blanket that you want to be used in the inside as the actual blanket part and lay it face down like a diamond. You will then cut the corners like so: The bottom corner is just snipped of straight at 2 inches. The one straight across from that, the top corner is cut at 8 inches from the corner and straight across to 8 inches from the other side. The other two corners are cut at 6.5 inches from the corner and straight across to 6.5 inches from the other side.
Then take your other receiving blanket and lay it flat with right sides down. Cut the top and bottom of the blanket (the picture is not rotated sorry) 6.25 inches from the corner and straight across to the other side.
Fold the two strips in half with right sides together. Take them to the sewing machine and sew from the fold up with 1/2 inch seam allowance. Then make a graduated point and turn and sew back down to the fold on the other side.
Find the half of the short side and fold the bottom corner up 1/2 inch above the half way point. This measurement is 7.5 inches.
Take the strap and fold the raw edge under 1/2 inch and put this over the triangle point that you folded down. Pin into place.
Sew around the outer edge of the main piece of the swaddle blanket and across the inside edge. You then need to sew up the middle where the two corners were folded down to secure down. Then sew a rectangle around the strap. (Please let me know if that was way to confusing)
Grab your blanket piece and lay with the top edge towards you and right sides up. Put your swaddling cloth part on top of this piece with the top edges matching. If you have a directional print on your fabric the print will be facing away from you on both pieces.
Pin around the lines that you sewed in two steps above. That means on the bottom of the swaddling cloth and then straight up from the corners to the top. DO NOT sew across the top.
Did you notice the secret pocket? It's in between the swaddling layer and the blanket. You can add an extra folded blanket or pillow for extra comfort for baby, or you can slip in a burp rag for those just in case it comes up moments.
So what do you think? It's kind of like unwrapping a present each time you get your darling baby out. Let me know if you try it out! And if you want one of your own I sewed several of them that will be hitting my craft store with my grand opening On September 1st!

Really clever & such a fun switch from the basic baby blanket. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I wish I would have had one of these when I had little babies. I am featuring this at somedaycrafts.blgospot.com
ReplyDeleteI'm with Michelle - I wish I had one of these when my baby was still a baby. We swaddled, but she always kicked free and then woke up.

ReplyDeleteso cute! I've got to try this :) I have a bunch of these kind of blanket floating around! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteI am so excited to try these out!! What size of blankets are best to start out with? Just in case I find some adorable flannel on the bolt...
ReplyDeleteI tried this...and it didn't work out so well. What size blankets are these? Mine must be way bigger than yours because mine came out huge and could swaddle a 2 year old!
ReplyDeleteI used Target blankets and mine came out huge as well. Only thing I can think is that I wasn't too precise in my cutting and pinning? Can you tell me, when yours is folded up, what it measures height and width? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhere were you when I had my son who loved to be swaddled. This is awesome, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about trying to figure out how to make one and now I don't have to spend the time trying to figure it out!

I don't understand this part,"Sew around the outer edge of the main piece of the swaddle blanket and across the inside edge". What are you referring to as the outer and inside edge? It's hard to see your stitching in the photos for explanatory purposes, maybe one sewn with a contrasting thread would explain it better?am i the only one confused about this step?
ReplyDeleteThe inside edge meaning where the triangle has been folded down so the right side is up. You want to sew that edge down so it doesn't lift up. Sorry to be confusing and I didn't want to use contrasting thread because then I can't use the swaddle. Let me know if you are still confused and I'll see if I can explain it another way. If you look at the photo you are referring to the part that you can see that is the right sides of the fabric is what you are sewing around. So completely around the shape, and then two striaight lines down the middle where the edge of the right sides is. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThis is so clever and cute! I'm featuring it in my Friday Favorites this week!
ReplyDeleteCould you tell me the dimensions of your receiving blankets you used? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI just found this tutorial the other day and used it to make a baby shower gift. Thanks for the inspiration! My photos are here: http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.com/2011/11/warning-baby-stuff-ahead.html

ReplyDeleteHello,
My name is Taylor Ligan. As a former patient of Children's Hospital Los Angeles, I am having a baby blanket drive to benefit NICCU at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. This is my first year and am hoping this will grow and continue to benefit CHLA for years to come. I am enclosing my official Facebook page for this blanket drive. There you will find information on why I am doing this drive and the progress I have made so far. There is also a link to my interview on the KTLA morning news where I was invited to speak about my blanket drive.
www.facebook.com/TaylorsBabyBlankets.
I would like to offer you the opportunity to donate blankets to my cause. It can be any amount, out of season, out of package, returned items or any type you may choose. I was looking through your site and see that you have some beautiful blankets. It would be wonderful if you and your company can be part of a pioneer group of corporate sponsors who have already donated products.
We are planning on bringing all the blankets to the hospital next month. So, if you are interested in participating in this blanket drive by donating, you still have time. Any amount of blankets will be appreciated. As a thank you, we will add your name to our list of official donors in the first official drop-off presentation day at Children's Hospital
As we are expecting to make the first delivery in a few weeks. we are working on having media coverage for this day. And, if you choose to donate some blankets, we would offer your brochure/information to accompany the blankets as they are distributed to the family of the babies in the neo natal unit
Feel free to contact me if you would like to be part of this special cause. If you choose to participate in this blanket drive, please mail to:

Please include or email your company logo and brochures/press release in your donation.
If you are unable to make a donation at this time, I would really appreciate a Like on my Facebook page. I really need to get my cause out there and that Like would really help my cause.
Thank you for taking the time in reading my email.
