Messy Zipper Flower Headband

Yeah, It's ANOTHER zipper flower. This time it's messy! This one is so incredibly easy to make because really, you can't mess it up. The point is to make it look messy and not symmetrical! Grab yourself a 20 inch coat zipper. Meaning a zipper where the teeth are gold or silver. Unzip it to separate the sides. Then you will start at the top of the zipper and tuck the extra end towards you.
Grab your needle and thread. Wrap the zipper around this tucked in end and stitch in place.
Then turn the zipper back the same direction you came. Whoa, I know. This is what gives it the messy look. Stitch in place.
You can continue stitching in that direction for a while.
And then you can randomly change directions. When you change directions you can tuck the zipper underneath itself or over itself to make the pleating and change of directions different each time. Continue until you have completely used one side of the zipper.
Get the other side, this side will have the zipper pull. To remove the zipper pull simply make a tiny snip in between the first teeth of the zipper.
Right here...
And then unzip the pull and it will come right off. Then put a little flame where you snipped to keep the edge from fraying.
You can get rid of the zipper pull, or you can stash it for another project like I do. Start sewing with the other side right where you left off.
The back will be extremely messy. And that's okay. Make lots of stitches to secure your flower.
Keep switching directions to add to the random messyness of your flower.
Once you are done sew the end securely underneath. Then cut a piece of felt that will fit the bottom and sew it into place.
Turn it over and admire your beauty.
Wait, you need to turn it back over and sew on a piece of the soft side of a velcro strip.
Now you can turn it over and really enjoy it!
Simply attach it to your headband and you are good to go!
This one looks great tucked up by a sophisticated bun or updo!
How fun would it be to wear one of these on your wedding day!

Grosgrain Ribbon Rosette

I hope you are enjoying my headband Extravaganza week as much as I am! It's been allot of fun! This one is another simple yet funky flower.

You will need grosgrain ribbon for this one. Take a flame to the end of the ribbon to seal those ends from fraying.
Then twist the ribbon just up from the edge.
Hot glue it in place and then twist again. You could also hand sew this.
Then twist again and hot glue.
And twist again. As you twist you will notice that you will start coming back around again to where you started in a circle.
Once you get to the point that you are at the start you want to tuck underneath the starting edge so as you continue to twist the ribbon you end up underneath the starting circle, which will create the center of the flower. Just keep hot gluing in place.
Here you will see that I have gone around the complete circle and soon it will start behind.
Just keep twisting the ribbon and gluing.
Now you will see I have formed the second circle underneath the top one by going behind and continuing to twist.
Just keep twisting and gluing.
Around and Around...
And around and around.
Now I've started a third circle around.
Just simply keep placing hot glue in between the layers to secure them in place.
Keep twisting the ribbon and gluing.
Once you get your flower to the size you want cut off the ribbon and tuck the edge under and glue in place.
The back will be a crazy mess like this.
Cut out a felt circle that will fit on the back of the rosette. Then hot glue a piece of the soft side of the velcro strip to it.
And hot glue it to the back of the flower.
And there you have it. A Grosgrain Ribbon Rosette.
The texture of the ribbon and the twisting gives it a funky look.
Attach it to your headband
And your good to go!

Zipper Petaled Flower Headband

Alright! I LOVE zippers. If you've been following me for a while or if you check out my tutorial page you will see that it's full of projects using them! I have made a few versions of a zipper flower. But here is why I LOVE this one. It looks real. Well as real as a zipper can look when comparing it to a flower. No cheesy gathered petal sections with swirls in the middle. This one looks like a rose would look all wrapped up nicely like a zipper... okay I'm blabbing...on with the show...

First off you'll need the base of a headband so check out my tutorial here. Then grab yourself a 20 inch coat zipper. That means that the teeth will either be silver or gold. Then start by separating the zipper sides and removing the zipper pull. See the little slit in between the first teeth of this zipper? That's the secret. Make a little snip and you can take the zipper pull right off. Then using a small flame run it over the slit to prevent it from fraying. Then you will make a pleat using your fingers just like so.
Don't mind the nail polish. But really. When you are a crafter that's just what happens. I can't seem to ever have them all the way painted and I would way rather craft than take the time to remove the polish. Take your needle and thread and put in a stitch to secure the pleat.
Then start winding the zipper around in a circle. You want the end of the zipper to kind of tuck in with the first loop around. Stitch in place as you go.
Keep winding in a circle and stitching until you get around once more.
Now we want to start creating the look of petals so we will start to pleat and go in a triangle. Remember put in a lot of stitches to secure in place.
From the back side it will look like this.
Just keep wrapping the zipper around creating points on each side. The points will get more distinctive as you move farther away from the center.
Just keep on going.
When you get to the end of the first side of the zipper tuck the end underneath and stitch it in place so you can't see it.
Stitch it very securely in place.
To start the next zipper side simply fold over the edge of the zipper until the teeth are at the edge. Continue where the other side left off and stitch in place.
Continue to sew it in peaks around a triangle shape until you have completely used the zipper. Tuck the end underneath and securely sew in place.
This is what the front will look like.
The three dimensional look of the petals is incredible.
Such a fun, flirty, sassy, ans sophisticated flower.
Okay, enough swooning. Grab a piece of felt and cut it into a circle to fit on the back and sew the soft side of a velcro piece onto it.
Then sew it to the back of the flower, or you can be lazy like me and hot glue it.
Then you can put it onto your headband
And sport around your new cool hair accessory.
Trust me, they are so fun, you'll want one in every color!
They also look great tucked back by that pony tail or on a crocheted beanie!
They even look fabulous pinned to a cardigan!

Stay tuned later this week for another zipper flower tutorial! Next time it will be more of a messy look! And remember Saturday will be a HUGE link up with all of your headband tutorials! You'll want to link up for your chance to be featured! You all are so wonderful!!! I LOVE seeing what you create!
